We're Married!

Here's a real-time quarantine life update: nearly four weeks ago, on Friday July 3rd, Art & I got married!

I think the last wedding update I shared here was several months ago, as we were still in limbo, waiting for more information to officially make the call about our October wedding in Mexico. Truthfully, we both knew for a while it wasn't likely to happen, I guess we (mostly me) were delaying the inevitable. Right after my birthday (by the way I turned 29! woo-hoo!) we made the decision to postpone our original plans (same venue, etc.) to April 2021. And that was, quite honestly, a relief. Any sad or disappointed feelings I had about it were already processed at that point and it just felt good to have an official decision and a plan and an update to tell everyone.

Now, April 2021 in Mexico is our *plan*, but if there's anything this year has taught us all, it's that we make plans, and that's all they really are, until they actually happen. So, let's see.

Right after this ceremony I remember thinking to myself something like "I really really hope we can have our fun plans in April with everyone, but even if we can't, this 'wedding' was really nice and special."

We had planned to be legally married before our "fun wedding" (as I keep calling it) regardless, since we needed to get married in the state of Tennessee, but with COVID-19 and delaying our date, we were like, ok let's just do it? Truthfully all we needed/wanted was my brother Amir to officiate, which would have made it just the three of us, but it quickly turned into a very intimate, festive, chill, gathering, and for that, I am so grateful!

I was able to have a couple classic wedding day elements of pomp & circumstance (hanging around and getting ready with my sisters all day, hiding in a hedge before walking down the aisle) as well as some distinctly pandemic flair - having the ceremony in the park that we walk to nearly every day with Piper, having our "reception" at a neighborhood restaurant we love. Oh, and I guess everything else about the ceremony, too.

I keep joking that it was nice that we were able to use some of our "B-side" songs for this ceremony. We Zoomed in the rest of our families, which shows they REALLY love us because they showed up for another Zoom meeting! I loved the "casual but still bridal" or "nuptials but make it Summer 2020 pandemic" outfits that Art & I both put together. I picked up my bouquet from a local florist after calling them that day, and the flower in my hair came from a dear friend's garden (thanks Helen!!) We used "fake rings" because we didn't even have our real bands yet, Art using a thick gold band with a ruby in the middle, straight out of 1975, that belonged to his dad (I think it's amazing, Art said "I can't wear this, it makes me look like I have gambling debts.") Amir's homily was perfect. That was definitely one of the most special parts, having my little brother marry us! I assigned everyone a "job" (of course) and Carina was in charge of photos. I honestly would have been happy with one snapshot just for memories, but she is so talented with that phone of hers :) Oh and how can I forget my {other} favorite thing? That from the moment I stepped out of our front door, to walk to the airpark with Galina & Carina, our neighbor across the street, getting her mail, was like "...are you guys getting married?!" and I felt like the neighborhood was celebrating with us the whole way (the dad/daughter on their bike ride "congratulations!" etc.) That could make me emotional at any time!

All pandemic long we've been joking about how if we were in quarantine during a pandemic and still got married, we can make it through anything! This ceremony was super chill and exactly what we wanted. For now, anyway.

Things have also felt slightly out of order and though I hate to use the word anti-climatic...I'll just say, we are looking forward to more exciting wedding feelings next year :) I'd be lying if I said there haven't been times where we've been disappointed, but hey, what a dose of perspective, right? And honestly, since the ceremony things have just felt good. We're starting our lives together as a married couple, certainly not the way we planned, but nonetheless!

We're in the middle of "the first of many honeymoons": driving West to California to see my parents, with a pit stop in Yellowstone for Art's birthday! It's definitely a "four birds with one stone" kind of trip. I jokingly say "first honeymoon", though this ceremony really did kick off about a year of celebrating our marriage! What can we do? We rescheduled, & we'll be making up for it!

The biggest thank you again to all of our friends and family, both in person and online, for supporting us, loving us, and celebrating with us in whatever way possible! We are loved, we are fortunate, and most importantly, we are MARRIED!
